Open ideas competition promoted by the Caldes de Malavella City Council to design the new municipal library. The building is planned to coexist with the urban frame and opens itself to the adjacent square.
The building concept is based on three main issues:
- The integration with the site and especially with the existing level difference between the square and the street.
- The rationalization and layout of the functional program to optimize the use of the building.
- Constructive systems and processes that improve the sustainability of the building and guarantee energy savings, maintenance low cost and amortize the construction costs along its life.
The building is organized along a central access that conveys in a large space from where the different platforms are extended. The interior organization of the library is easily understandable from the first moment. This central space has a longitudinal skylight that provides a controlled natural lightning to all the interior zones all around the year. The consulting table is placed in the center of this space in order to improve its efficiency. The different zones are distributed in open and flexible spaces which can allow possible use changes. The situation of the different areas regarding the entrance is based on the frequency of use and lighting needs.
