The new building is placed in a corner of the existing open space and composes a new façade for the courtyard.

As a project strategy and due to the irregularity of the patio and the different shapes and highs of the party walls facing the courtyard, a single intervention unifies the new building and the accesses renovation. This is intended to provide a formal coherence and a volumetric unity which improves the appearance and perception of the space in the courtyard, while hiding the view of the degraded party walls.
The building is located on ground floor and consists of a gym with attached services and an access porch. The gym has two adjacent store-rooms. The services consist of two adjacent dressing rooms (with integrated showers and toilets), a dressing room for disabled people and a room for installations. Access to these services is made directly from the porch. The project has been planned so that in a future intervention the porch could be extended forming a covered space that connects the gym, the school and the courtyard through stairs and an accessible ramp.
The highest volume of the building is the gym, which is aligned to the limit of the public space. From here, the rest of the functional program (services, stairs and ramps) is placed attached to the existing party wall and occupying the minimum possible space in order not to lose much surface form the playing zones. The roof of the building is a continuous element which folds and adapts itself to the different highs and covers all the volumes and areas in order to give a uniform aspect.
The gym’s openings are placed on the northern and southern façades, so that natural light and crossed ventilation is guaranteed.
